  • In September 2025, a new version of the map Transboundary Aquifers of the World was published by IGRAC and UNESCO-IHP. The TBA Commission proudly supported the development of this map as a scientific committee. Our members, representing a variety of regions, played a key role in the literature review, advised on key methodological issues, and contributed to the final revision of the dataset. The new map, the dynamic map viewer and the methodology report are accessible here.
  • In 2022, on the occasion of the ‘Year for Groundwater’, the Hydrogeology Journal published a topical collection of essays from IAH Commissions, including one on transboundary aquifers:

Rivera, A., Pétré, MA., Fraser, C. et al. Why do we need to care about transboundary aquifers and how do we solve their issues?. Hydrogeol J 31, 27–30 (2023). https://doi.org/10.1007/s10040-022-02552-y

  • On 6-9 December 2021, UNESCO organized the conference “ISARM2021 – Transboundary Aquifers: Challenges and the Way Forward”, in order to showcase the variety of efforts in improving the assessment and the management of transboundary aquifers across the world. The book of abstracts was published, as well as a selection of papers illustrating the challenges and the way forward with transboundary aquifers of the world. On the occasion, IGRAC also published a global outline of transboundary aquifers, coming back to more than 20 years of efforts in TBA assessment and governance.
